Shopify eligibility and discovery

How to Get Your Shopify Products Into ChatGPT Shopping

Eligible Shopify products can be supplied to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. You do not need a separate ChatGPT submission for that route. You do need the right store setup, eligible products, complete policies, and product data that accurately describes what you sell.

Outcome: the product can become available for relevant shopping results. Placement is not guaranteed.
Shopify Catalog is the primary product-data route for Shopify agentic storefronts.

First, define success correctly

Discoverable is not the same as recommended

Eligibility means Shopify can make a product available to ChatGPT. Discoverability means ChatGPT can find information about it through Catalog or another route. Recommendation depends on the shopper’s intent and the information available at that moment. OpenAI says not every available product will be shown.

Product results are organic, not ads. OpenAI does not publish a guaranteed placement process for merchants. See how ChatGPT selects shopping results.

1. Confirm store and product eligibility

Do this before rewriting product pages

Shopify currently requires the store to sell to US customers, products to qualify for Shopify Catalog, acceptance of the Agentic Storefronts terms, and completed Terms, Privacy, and Return and refund policies. B2B-only products are not supported. Products prohibited by OpenAI commerce policy do not display.

In Shopify admin, open Sales channels → Agentic. The ChatGPT channel is active by default for eligible stores, but merchants can deactivate Catalog access. Review Shopify’s ChatGPT requirements.

2. Inspect the Catalog record

Make the product understandable without guesswork

Shopify Catalog syndicates title, description, options, images, price, availability, and other key attributes. If important facts live in custom fields, metafields, metaobjects, tags, or custom title logic, use Shopify Catalog Mapping so the correct source is used.

Example: “MetroShell Backpack” says little. “24L waterproof commuter backpack with a 16-inch laptop sleeve” exposes facts a buyer may actually request. This improves the record’s clarity; it does not guarantee a recommendation. Shopify also requires relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 description characters. Catalog data details.

Custom metafields need Catalog Mapping when Shopify does not source them correctly by default.

3. Check every discovery route separately

Catalog is primary. The open web still matters.

Shopify describes Catalog as the primary route for agentic storefront product data. Products may also be discovered through feeds you own and share, or through public pages found by crawling and indexing.

Blocking an AI crawler in robots.txt affects open-web discovery only; it does not stop product data from reaching an activated channel through Catalog. Turning off Catalog access also does not guarantee disappearance if another route still exposes the product. Shopify’s agents.md and llms.txt files describe the store but do not replace Catalog. Read the discovery-path documentation.

Turning off Catalog access does not necessarily remove products found through other external routes.

A practical failure example

“Active” can still hide a product-level problem

A store may have ChatGPT access enabled while one backpack remains unavailable because it is B2B-only, Unlisted, out of stock, missing from the intended Catalog mapping, or excluded by policy. Channel status alone is not enough. Check the exact product and variant.

Likewise, a product can be eligible and accurately syndicated but never appear for “best hiking backpack” because ChatGPT considers other products more relevant. That is a recommendation question, not an onboarding failure.

Where Dropstore helps

Find the missing readiness evidence

Dropstore audits Shopify catalog fields, product content, structured data, crawler access, metadata, and storefront health. It also records selected AI prompts and their answers. That helps separate a setup gap from an observed visibility gap—without claiming guaranteed placement.

Actionable checklist

Get a Shopify product ready for ChatGPT discovery

  1. 1Confirm that your store sells to customers in the United States.
  2. 2Open Sales channels → Agentic and confirm ChatGPT Catalog access is active.
  3. 3Accept the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms.
  4. 4Complete Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy in Shopify admin.
  5. 5Check that each intended product is eligible for Shopify Catalog, D2C, and not prohibited by OpenAI policy.
  6. 6Review title, description, category, options, images, price, and live availability.
  7. 7Map metafields, metaobjects, or custom product logic into Shopify Catalog when needed.
  8. 8Place relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 product-description characters.
  9. 9Verify the public product page and its robots.txt access separately from Catalog delivery.
  10. 10Test relevant buyer prompts and treat every appearance as an observation, not a guaranteed rank.
